Ever-increasing vessel sizes, cargo volumes and shipping line consolidation continues to put pressure on ports and terminals, who must respond if they are to remain competitive. But when will ports stop playing catch up? When will ship sizes stabilize? And when does it stop making economical sense for ports to continue to adapt?
Digitisation, automation and decarbonisation have already taken hold of the shipping industry and ports can no longer afford to wait in line. In today’s digital environment, expansions alone won’t help. Overcapacity is a real threat and operators must adopt a digital mindset if they are to remain competitive.
