SSE Bootcamp

Building the next generation of site leadership

Designed to strengthen the capabilities of site-based teams in the Middle East, a new bootcamp is offering structured development for supervisors, foremen and site engineers.

Building the next generation of site leadership

As projects become increasingly complex and digital tools ever more integral to Keller’s operations, there’s a growing need for site leaders to work more independently, make informed decisions and proactively resolve challenges without always relying on back-office support.

With this in mind, Keller Middle East has launched a new training programme, the Supervisor & Site Engineer Bootcamp.

“Our supervisors, foremen and site engineers have developed exceptional practical skills through years of field experience,” says Shad Khan, Lead Geotechnical Consultant. “While formal qualifications haven’t always been a prerequisite for these positions, their ability to plan, organise and execute work successfully has contributed significantly to Keller's operational success.

“However, the increasing use of digital systems, data-driven reporting and structured project controls requires additional competencies that were not traditionally expected in these roles. Our objective with the Bootcamp is to bridge that gap and improve technical knowledge, as well as develop teams that can think independently, communicate effectively and take ownership of project outcomes.”

The first cohort of 10 came together in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in early June, followed by a second cohort in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and it shall continue to reach out to all engineers and supervisory staff in the Middle East.

The programme is delivered in two modules:

Module 1 – Building the Foundations

The first module focused on establishing a common technical foundation and enhancing participants’ understanding of Keller and its operations. Key topics included:

  • An introduction to Keller, its values, culture and business operations
  • Mathematics and science fundamentals relevant to field operations
  • Basic geotechnical engineering principles
  • Overview of Keller products and techniques
  • Quality control requirements and best practices
  • A glimpse into project performance management

Module 2 – Improving Site Performance and Communication

The second module concentrated on practical site management and reporting skills, including:

  • Effective site reporting and documentation
  • Daily activity and production reporting
  • Preparation of borehole logs and soil classification
  • Stress management
  • Time management and delegation
  • Communicating with clarity
  • Dealing with conflict
  • A guide to values and behaviours

By training supervisors and site engineers together, the programme also promotes stronger collaboration on site, allowing each role to complement the other and collectively improve project reporting, communication, planning and execution.

Continuous improvement

Keller Middle East is now developing a third module exclusively for site engineers, which will focus on the commercial and contractual aspects of project delivery. The aim is to give participants a broader understanding of how technical performance impacts project profitability and client satisfaction.

“Feedback from the cohorts has been very positive, with participants recognising the practical relevance of the training and its direct application to their daily responsibilities,” adds Shad. “As with any new initiative, lessons learned from each session will be incorporated into future deliveries to continuously improve the programme.

“The SSE Bootcamp represents an important investment in our people and reflects Keller Middle East's commitment to developing capable, confident and accountable site leaders who are equipped to meet the challenges of today's projects and the opportunities of tomorrow.”
