Keller’s entry into large-diameter deep foundations in the Middle East was marked by the Line project. Operational excellence was achieved through the deployment of new LB45 rigs and the combined expertise of global and local teams, demonstrating Keller’s Global Strength and Local Focus.
The project
THE LINE was planned as a 170-kilometre-long, zero-carbon, eco-friendly linear megacity, comprising two parallel, 500-metre-high structures within a total width of just 200 metres. Its ambitious futuristic design formed a flagship project of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
The challenge
The tall, slender structures required large-diameter, deep foundations to achieve the safe bearing capacity in dense to very dense cemented Sands with interbedded Clay/Silt layers. The remote location also demanded meticulous logistical planning and project management. The heavily loaded piles required a heavy steel cage design, challenging the fabrication and lowering processed in stages.
The solution
Bored Piles of Ø1.5 m and 65 m deep, were constructed on schedule using 5 new LB45 rigs, operating continuously in day-night shifts. High-quality polymer with additives stabilized the boreholes, while direct concrete pouring with tremie reduced casting times. The heavy steel cage fabrication and lowering was masterly planned to ensure uninterrupted production that exceeded expectations. Keller’s operational excellence set a benchmark on the LINE project, earning strong appreciation from the Client particularly for the HSEQ.
