Keller successfully delivered a design-and-build solution for the BSP 380 kV Substation using large-diameter Vibro-stone columns, achieving the required bearing capacity, controlling settlements, and enabling an optimized reinforced concrete foundation design while mitigating liquefaction risks under seismic loading.
The project
The project forms part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing investment in power infrastructure under Vision 2030. New substations are being developed across the Kingdom to increase network capacity, improve reliability, and support sustained economic and population growth.
The challenge
Substation foundations were planned on challenging mixed ground conditions comprising soft sandy silt/clay layers interbedded with silty sands. The key challenge was to deliver a cost-effective design-and-build solution capable of achieving a bearing capacity of 175 kPa while maintaining allowable settlements of 25mm for isolated foundations and 50mm format foundations.
The solution
Keller delivered a design-and-build ground improvement solution comprising large-diameter vibro-stone columns installed using the air-water top-feed method to control surface mud and water effluent. The solution also incorporated treatment to mitigate seismic-induced liquefaction risks. The design was based on CPT data and validated through load testing, confirming compliance with the project requirements.
